LED Kitchen Lighting – Creating the Love of Light for the Heart of the Home

Sep 24, 2018

“The kitchen is the most important place in any house. Visit your family, and that’s where you’ll end up. Go to a party, that’s where everyone congregates.”

Light up your Kitchen

Those are the words (above) of world-renowned actress Michelle Dockery, star of television’sDownton Abbey, but she no doubt captures the sentiment of people everywhere who gravitate toward the kitchen for many everyday and special functions.

Some might even call the kitchen the new family room.

So when you talk about kitchen lighting – you’re talking about a wide range of tones, functions, tasks and purposes.

Each of these can be enhanced by the selective use of LED lighting. Like a palate of different hues, these different styles of lighting can really add just the right touch to your kitchen. So begin to think – which spaces in your kitchen require lighting that provides ambiance and which require functional lighting?

Sometimes the answer will be – both. At different times of day, the kitchen may be a brightly lit homework or bills-paying work station while at other times it will be the warmly lit cafe for morning coffee or an after-dinner glass of wine or even a late night of cup of tea while flipping through magazines or enjoying hobbies like scrapbooking.

Here are some considerations for you as you determine the best LED lighting for your kitchen. View TCP Kitchen Lighting for more inspiration.

Task Lighting

When the kitchen is full-throttle active, dimmer switches get cranked to the right or focused task light is beamed at the target. It could be cooking over the stove, friends mixing cookies (be sure the task light is on the measuring cup – you don’t want to mess up cookie batter!), and all the other tasks that require precision, clarity and comfort. There’s nothing worse than having to review dreaded bills and to also get a headache from squinting. Energy-efficient LED lighting is one way to keep the high cost of energy in check.

Recessed LED Lighting for Your Kitchen

Also called “downlights,” recessed lighting are light fixtures installed into a hollow opening in a ceiling. Recessed lighting in the ceiling is best for general room lighting. It combats glare and shadows. This lighting performs especially well in open areas of the kitchen, like walkways or the space between the sink and an island. Recessed lighting is great for task lighting as well. They can be adjusted and focused on the task at hand – cooking, cleaning, food preparation as well as non-dining activities like playing cards, talking, doing homework, crafting and book clubs.

Track Lighting for Your Kitchen

If your ceiling is too high or cannot accommodate recessed lighting, track lighting is a great solution. Track lighting gives your ceiling a clean look. You can control the lighting height and have more creative options to be decorative providing focused lighting for cooking, cleaning and socializing. There are many LED light styles to choose from. Combine these choices with different styles of tracking – such as monorails, cable or steel wire – and you’ll create a one-of-a-kind kitchen that reflects your style.

Under Cabinet Lights

We talk a lot about the aesthetics of a warm, friendly and beautiful kitchen design. It’s a combination of mood lighting and task lighting, and provides a balance in which light punctuates what home enthusiasts call “the kitchen at rest.” You know, those moments “in between” moments – when meals are done, homework is complete, lunches are packed, dishes are cleared and groceries put away. When the kitchen is on reprieve until morning, or the next moment when someone bursts through the door and fills the room up with light and laughter again.

Island Lighting for Your Kitchen

This is where you can really use your design imagination, creating an open, inviting space right in the heart of your home that really sets a mood. Which mood? Depending on the time of day, any mood you want. Chandeliers do wonders to define the space just below the ceiling and just above the active area at your island, making it a study area by day, and a warm, relaxing cafe by night. Once you master the art of the dimmer switch, you’ll become a homebody who loves staying inside the nest.

Everyone congregates in the kitchen, so be sure you use the lighting to set the mood and make it a haven for your home.
