The Difference Between Indoor & Outdoor Light Bulbs
While it is not recommended to use indoor light bulbs for outdoor fixtures, outdoor bulbs are more versatile. In fact, many homeowners ask, can all light bulbs be used outdoors? The short answer is no—but outdoor-rated bulbs are almost always appropriate to use indoors as well.
Looking for clarity on indoor vs outdoor light bulbs? Read on to learn how bulbs are rated for outdoor use and which types of light bulbs work best for exterior fixtures.
UL Rating
One of the easiest ways to determine how to tell if lights are indoor or outdoor is by checking the UL rating. When you read the online description or look at the box for a light bulb, you will see a UL listing. This rating indicates the bulb’s ability to withstand damp or wet conditions and is the key distinction in indoor vs outdoor light bulbs.
UL listing categories are as follows:
“Dry Locations”
These bulbs can be safely used in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and kitchens. Dry location bulbs should not be used outdoors, answering the common question of can all light bulbs be used outdoors—they cannot.
“Damp Locations”
These bulbs can be safely used in bathrooms (including showers), indoor pool areas, utility rooms, and unfinished basements. Damp location bulbs may be used outdoors only in fully covered areas, such as covered porches, gazebos, or under large awnings.
“Wet Locations”
Wet location bulbs are designed for open outdoor areas such as patios, walkways, and outdoor dining spaces. Landscape and hardscape lighting—including path lights and garden accent lighting—require wet location rated bulbs.
If you are unsure whether a fixture requires a damp or wet location bulb, it is always best to err on the side of caution and choose a wet-rated option.
Incandescent Bulbs
Standard incandescent light bulbs can be used outdoors so long as they are not directly exposed to rain. Covered locations are best for standard incandescent bulbs. If there is any chance the bulb will be exposed to the elements, always check the packaging to confirm it is rated for outdoor use—another key factor in indoor vs outdoor light bulbs.
LED Lights
LED light bulbs are available in all UL rating levels, making them one of the most flexible options when deciding can all light bulbs be used outdoors. When planning energy-efficient outdoor lighting, always check the LED packaging for its UL rating. Fully exposed fixtures require wet location bulbs. Enclosed fixtures or fixtures under awnings require at least a damp location rating
Knowing how to tell if lights are indoor or outdoor is especially important with LEDs, since they are commonly used in both settings.
Fluorescents
You are not likely to find fluorescent lighting for outdoor use. Fluorescent tube lighting (T8s) are temperature sensitive, which makes them a poor choice for outdoor use in places with variable temperatures throughout the seasons.
With this in mind, it is important to check on the T8s in your garage. If your garage falls below zero degrees Fahrenheit, they may stop working.
In addition, the ballast fixture for your T8s should also be rated for the same temperature resistance.
CFLs
CFL bulbs should generally be used indoors only. Most CFLs are UL rated for dry locations and do not function well in cold weather, reinforcing why not all light bulbs can be used outdoors.
If CFLs must be used in colder conditions, Cold Cathode CFLs (CCFLs) are available and designed to operate in lower temperatures.
