TCP, Inc. Donates More Than 1,100 CFLs to Duke Smart Home

New dormitory to promote energy efficiency among college students

TCP, Inc., in partnership with The Home Depot, donated 1,152 n:vision energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to guests who visited the grand opening of the new “Smart Home” dormitory at Duke University.   Officials call it a “living laboratory” of energy efficiency featuring solar-powered electricity, high-end fluorescent lighting and recycled house water.

The 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom dormitory, funded by The Home Depot, took  four years to complete. The building has a Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council – one of 18 Duke projects headed for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design stamp of approval.

The Home Depot Smart Home will be a co-ed residence, with 10 students living there full time. The program encourages students from different academic disciplines to form teams and explore smart ways to use technology in the home.
